the events i witness affect my thought process

Allowing me to feel for others

i wish i could be indifferent, unchanged

by a Marine crying beside his grandmothers grave

refusing to leave

Unemotional as EMTs remove the rope from around a fathers neck

as he lays cold on the kitchen floor

his sons picture staring at me from the counter

im supposed to remain composed

as i tell a woman to call the hospital

not knowing that as i stand there, they tell her her husband has died

shes my age, all she has

A cop standing in her dim lit hallway

and she latches on

Life touches me

i function i feel i think i grieve

i love i hate

in my black polished boots

i smile i laugh i cry

life touches me

The professional edge has molded me

experience hasnt made it different

Reacting. not reacting

as a trained observer

even though im on the outside

looking in

im trying to make a difference
